Red Bull demoted Russian driver Daniil Kvyat on Thursday and replaced him with Max Verstappen for the rest of the Formula One season, starting with next week’s Spanish Grand Prix.

The 18-year-old Verstappen’s promotion from feeder team Toro Rosso comes after Kvyat twice barged into Sebastian Vettel’s car in Sunday’s Russian Gran Prix, knocking him out of the race on the first lap.

“Max has proven to be an outstanding young talent. His performance at Toro Rosso has been impressive so far and we are pleased to give him the opportunity to drive for Red Bull Racing,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said in a statement. “We are in the unique position to have all four drivers across Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso under long term contracts with Red Bull, so we have the flexibility to move them between the two teams.”

I’ve sort of been waiting for this since the middle of last year.

They had to wait until after the Russian GP so Putin wouldn’t invade Milton Keynes.

Nope. Danii’s had a season and a start to show his mettle and he’s been comprehensively smashed (yeah, he finished ahead of him in the standings, but that was just due to RIC having worse mechanical luck) by his teammate the whole time. He’s fast on occasion, but he makes too many stupid mistakes. Even the original “Torpedo” was a super-risky divebomb. It wasn’t a legitimate overtaking move. He pushed into the path of two cars already committed to a line. He got away with it, we got to watch Seb whine his way back to the podium, and and got that brilliant “I was racing, man” justification which was appropriate... But it was still a megadick move. There was zero excuse for the final #RussianTorpedo. Yeah, Seb didn’t go into the corner flat out with a car next to him and unsure of how much damage the previous impact did to him. It was amateur. I was pretty sold on the wee-baby Max “NO!” Verstappen taking the seat in the middle of last season and was kind of surprised that he didn’t get it then.
